The History of Bayat's Pottery

Hi, Sahabat ELempung, today i want to tell you the history of Bayat Pottery.
According to the surrounding community, the tradition of pottery making in Bayat is inseparable from the story of Sunan Pandanaran. Once, Sunan Pandanaran, or often also referred to as the Prince of Sunan Tembayat or Mangkubumi, a figure that Muslim missionaries. He was the son of Ki Ageng Pandan Arang, the first regent of Semarang. When replacing his father as regent of Semarang, Ki Pandanaran began to forget the teachings of Islam, so that after hearing this, the Sultan of Demak NCO sent to sensitize Sunan Sunan Kalidjaga Pandanaran.
Long story short, Sunan Sunan Pandanaran Kalidjaga then suggested to wander to the southern area with his wife, without bringing treasures. He arrived in the area where he built a mosque in the village of Melikan as a form of the symbols of Islam. In the mosque he put a spot of clay to hold water for ablution.

The ablutions place by the surrounding community then called genthong. The Genthong beautifully made by taking clay from the local hills. Sunan Pandanaran also teaches how to make genthong of clay. First of all citizens for the purpose of making such genthong itself as a place of ablution water at home, but when so many have made, the genthong finally went on sale. Along the development, residents genthong Bayat also develop into other forms.
Starting from this story, we can conclude that the pottery Bayat has aged nearly 600 years since the kingdom of Demak himself standing at the end of the 15th century. However, research conducted by the Center for History and Preservation of Traditional Values Yogyakarta in 2005, found that the likelihood of pottery Bayat much older anymore, precisely from prehistoric times. In the study it was found that the pottery Bayat still use the old ways (prehistoric) starting from the tools used, the manufacturing process, to the combustion practices. The functions of pottery still have similarities with the function of pottery in prehistoric times that is as practical and religious objects. From the observations, it can be concluded that the tradition of pottery making has been going on since at Bayat from prehistoric times.
Pottery Bayat has different characteristics when compared to pottery production elsewhere. Blackish color after the burn marks of authenticity. Bayat was never painted pottery like pottery or earthenware Kasongan other. More natural color which is a result of a combination of special clay taken from the surrounding villages with the added powder fine sand. This combination produces a more powerful vessels that are not easily broken when burned.
