Side wheel (Putaran Miring) made in Pagerjurang, Indonesia

Hi, Sahabat ELempung

Today  I want to share and tell you about the amazing cultural heritage in My lovely country (Indonesia). It's call Side wheel. All of you perhaps will think like how it can be, making pottery on slab woods which have extreme slope. Normal thing when we witness the making of pottery using wheel flat. It is often found in a variety of ceramic producing areas as well as being the most memorable scene from the movie "Ghost". But when we visited BAYAT, we will see things a little differently than usual. They use wheel is tilted a few degrees forward so that the manufacturing technique called oblique rotation technique.

Used circular plates are usually made of teak or mahogany wood with a diameter of 35-40 cm and 5-6 cm thick. To play this skew slab round rope is needed, which is usually made from hibiscus tree stalk attached to the steering wheel. The rope was then tied to a bamboo splinter on both sides and is driven using the legs play a round plate. The craftsmen usually sits on the bench (small chairs) with body position facing the wheel, pedaling to the left and play a round slab.

What inspires people to use the technique Bayat lopsided rounds this? According to the testimony of Mr. Sumilih, Chairman of Village Tourism Melikan, this technique is used because the first lot of pottery craftsmen came from women. They used to work making pottery by using kebaya and jarik. To maintain decorum, these women using oblique rotation techniques that require them to sit lopsided. At an angle like that, they keep the common courtesy to not open the thigh when working. Plus, the ergonomic, oblique rotation technique provides ease of women who wear cloth 'jarik' long to work because they do not have to bend his legs.
Oblique rotation techniques that will facilitate clay formed to widen due to the force of gravity so that the product can be made easily and quickly without spending any more power as the flat rotation technique. To make the pottery products using oblique rotation takes about 3-5 minutes depending on the difficulty level. The drawback of this technique is tilted round earthenware must be produced in small size and short and can not be used to make pottery in big and tall sizes. Maximum size of the resulting pottery is the maximum width of 23 cm and a maximum height of 30 cm.
The first time when i tried to use side wheel in Pagerjurang with Prof. Chitaru Kawasaki, it was interesting. I was putting 2 concentration, kicked the pedal to keep the rhythm and made the pottery. So, Let's visit PAGERJURANG and enjoying throwing pottery with side wheel.
I am waiting for you. Thanks for reading my blog :).
